Many are aware of facilities for geriatric care. These include nursing homes, assisted living, and retirement living. However, many do not know that geriatric care actually exists in a spectrum. This spectrum ranges from independent living, all the way to hospice care. However, in between that spectrum lies Alzheimer's Specialty Care Units, or SCUs. A recent health related-service trip peaked my interest in the differences that existed between Alzheimer's SCUs and the mainstream, generalized care that most people are familiar with. However, I wanted to further investigate the differences between the two, not only in terms of the facilities themselves, but also the differences in quality of care that the patients received.
