The Spectrum
Geriatric care for those inflicted by Alzheimer's most often exists in a spectrum. The spectrum begins with the senior citizen living comfortably in his or her own home. As the dementia progresses, the patient may progress into independent or assisted living, in which they receive daily help from staff in a generalized facility. However, if the disease progression is too severe and if the patient requires specialized care, he or she might opt to join an Alzheimer's Specialty Care Unit in which he or she will receive care from caretakers who are specially trained to care for those inflicted by Alzheimer's. Ultimately, once the disease progression becomes bad enough, the patient may be moved to a hospice where their passing is facilitated and made as painless and peaceful as possible.
